5”x7” Archival Print on museum quality 100% cotton rag stock. Originally drawn with pen and ink.
Limited edition of 10 exemplars.
The imagery depicted on this print is inspired by the Irish Christmas folk tradition of the hunting of the wren, which is celebrated on December 26th. The ancient custom, steeped in mythic symbolism, involves lively music, merriment and ritual disguise often in the form of straw masks. The revelers, known as Wrenboys, parade the streets, carrying a fake wren atop a decorated holly bush or stick, knocking on doors and collecting money with the refrain:
‘Up with the kettle and down with the pan
Give me a penny to bury the wren.’
